Mr. Jordan s ImageThis summer is a season of transition for Napa Valley Adult Education. For well over a year, our classes have mostly been held remotely due to the pandemic. While the majority of our summer classes will remain remote, we are gearing-up for the return to in-person classes this fall. We anticipate that the majority of classes will see the return of students and teachers to our classrooms throughout the county, and we will be ready.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            The fall ESL classes will return to the pre-pandemic structure, with a renewed focus on goal setting and hard work. Our ESL students come to us wanting to learn English quickly so they can more easily interact in the larger community, advance at work, and ensure their family is well cared for. To that end, we are increasing expectations for learning and, more importantly, offering the support to ensure all students learn at an appropriate rate. Over the past year we have had a number of upper level ESL students move into CTE pathway classes with language support. This ensures that all our students can quickly and equitably receive the training that will have the greatest positive long term effect. This trend will continue.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The High School Diploma and Equivalency programs will continue in a hybrid model. Our students have experienced great success because of the flexibility associated with on-line learning. As a result, the majority of our students will continue to take classes remotely.

The most exciting change coming to NVAE is the dramatic increase in the number of Career Technical Education classes that will be offered this summer and in the fall and spring of the coming school year. NVAE has established eight county-wide career pathways, and will soon have classes in all of these areas. The first new class, QuickBooks, will start this summer and lead to Certification. New classes will soon be announced in Culinary, Business, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Education, Technology, and Construction.

The pandemic has been hard on everyone, but the staff at NVAE has used this past year to (re)imagine how best to quickly and efficiently meet the needs of students in the Napa Valley, and we are anxious to get going.
